Saltwater Aquarium Lighting Forum for saltwater aquarium lighting topics. Perhaps one of the most expensive components in a reef tank set up, lighting is a topic that should researched thoroughly by the hobbyist. The type of lighting you use will determine which corals you can keep. There are several options for lighting such as T5-HO, VHO, Metal Halide, Power Compact and more recently LED. The new LED set ups are rather expensive but they can save you money in the long run.

Light on at night? Or during the day?

So I've been wondering when to turn on / off my fish tank lights.

I've just been waking up, turning on the lights feeding them.

Then right before I goto bed I turn it off and feed them again.

But I'm wondering if I should do it the other way around? Turn it on at night, and off during the day.

Does it matter? What do you guys do?

I go to work early in the morning, so I bought a timer and set it to turn on the lights at 9 in the morning and turn off at 9 in the evening in the 10g.

fish do sleep, and they need darkness as well. I'd leave the lights on during the day, and off at night, as you are doing.

Hello. I have my lights on timers as well. Since it's so hot here in the summer, I have mine set to come on at 6am and off at 11am. Back on at 4pm until 11pm for a total of 12 hours per day. The fish have done well for many years with this schedule.

as everybody said, to me it would be best to keep it as real as possible, lights on during the day, off at night. I would also keep in mind the temperature because the lights will raise the tmp.
