Saltwater Aquarium Lighting Forum for saltwater aquarium lighting topics. Perhaps one of the most expensive components in a reef tank set up, lighting is a topic that should researched thoroughly by the hobbyist. The type of lighting you use will determine which corals you can keep. There are several options for lighting such as T5-HO, VHO, Metal Halide, Power Compact and more recently LED. The new LED set ups are rather expensive but they can save you money in the long run.

175<>400 metal halide swap ??

Hey all,

technical Q
I just setup a 35 gallon hex in my bedroom, and I want to try the algae scrubber thing. Years ago I kept a reef, and being cheep, kept some of the stuff.

for years, when I needed to work late on the car, I plug in the 400 watt pendant (homemade industrial stuff from lowes) and it lit the work scene nicely ;-) now this pendant seems to fit the top of the hex about perfect, I can setup the algae grid right under the glass so all is well, but **** it is bright in here!!

Can I just screw a 175 lamp into the socket??
this ballast can be multi wired, but its rusty and none of the taps (just taped off now) could be ID'd I am sure of that, manual long gone anyway

I need to find some almost free lamps to try, old is fine, color shift don't matter

THANKS

Any picture of this setup ? IMO, I won't try it. I don't think it will work. A 400 watt bulb needs a 400 watt ballast. Same for a 175w bulb.
