Saltwater Aquarium Lighting Forum for saltwater aquarium lighting topics. Perhaps one of the most expensive components in a reef tank set up, lighting is a topic that should researched thoroughly by the hobbyist. The type of lighting you use will determine which corals you can keep. There are several options for lighting such as T5-HO, VHO, Metal Halide, Power Compact and more recently LED. The new LED set ups are rather expensive but they can save you money in the long run.

What lighting to get?
Ok, here's my situation. I just got an 80g aquarium (48" long). It came with lighting, but it doesn't really work. This tank I'm going to make brackish and slowly move it up to saltwater. So, my question is, what kind and wattage of lighting will I be looking for if I want to have live rock but no corals in that tank?

If you are going Fish only with Live Rock, the type of lighting and wattage will not matter one bit. A single fluorescent light bulb will be fine. If you eventually want to go reef with this tank, I would suggest starting out with coral, then add fish way later.

It'll be a puffer tank, so no corals
They'd think they're tasty
So I guess I can get whatever I find then...

Yeah. Just get whatever lighting you can afford and like the look of.
