Saltwater Aquarium Lighting Forum for saltwater aquarium lighting topics. Perhaps one of the most expensive components in a reef tank set up, lighting is a topic that should researched thoroughly by the hobbyist. The type of lighting you use will determine which corals you can keep. There are several options for lighting such as T5-HO, VHO, Metal Halide, Power Compact and more recently LED. The new LED set ups are rather expensive but they can save you money in the long run.

I owned a Odyssea 36" single MH/PC fixture for over a year, until my recent upgrade.
Great price, new improved designs. Which fixture are you getting ? PC or MH/PC ?

Those are PC (power compact) lights. I have two small odyssea PC fixtures. I'm very happy with them. The only down side is that most LFS don't carry the straight pin bulbs. I have no problem getting them on Dr. Foster & Smith's web-site.

I'm glad I found this thread... I've been looking at the 30" fixture for my 29gal, and I think I might get it.

Did some Googling about the brand, and apparently they used to have bad ballasts - so much so that leaving them on too long would set them ablaze. I guess in the past couple of years they started putting new ballasts on, though, that haven't had any problems. ...so far...

Sorry, bit of a rez, I know.

You have nothing to worry about. Those metal halide fixtures are safe. They are second generation fixtures. They use e-ballast, not the old magnetic ballast that would over heat and catch fire. I used the single 250watt odyssea fixture for over a year without any problems.

I'm curious how your guys' electric bills fare with those lights? I've got two PC fixtures now, and last month's bill was $50 more than usual...

I've got just over 400 watts on 1 tank, and 130 on the other. I definately noticed an impact on the electric bill. Now I'm waiting to see what happens to my water bill having added an RO filter.
