Saltwater Aquarium Lighting Forum for saltwater aquarium lighting topics. Perhaps one of the most expensive components in a reef tank set up, lighting is a topic that should researched thoroughly by the hobbyist. The type of lighting you use will determine which corals you can keep. There are several options for lighting such as T5-HO, VHO, Metal Halide, Power Compact and more recently LED. The new LED set ups are rather expensive but they can save you money in the long run.

so first off i guess i would like to know just what this lighting is classified as. can i get t-5 lights for it? or do i just need to get a whole new fixture?

That lighting fixture is a Power Compact fixture. "PC" No T5 bulbs would not work for this fixture. T5 bulbs are a type of bulb an PC is a different type. This type of lighting will allow you to keep soft corals, Zoanthids, mushrooms and some types of LPS "Large Polyp Stoney" Coral. That is a ok fixture to get you started. I would recommend using that fixture for a while, and getting some lower light corals and seeing how things go. Get a feel for what you like and then do some research on the type of lighting that, that type of corals need.
You don't want to by something now and 6 months from now decided that you really want a certain type of coral only to find out that the light you bought is now strong enough.
If you have some specific questions feel free to ask and I or another member will try and give you the best answer possible.
