Saltwater Aquarium Lighting Forum for saltwater aquarium lighting topics. Perhaps one of the most expensive components in a reef tank set up, lighting is a topic that should researched thoroughly by the hobbyist. The type of lighting you use will determine which corals you can keep. There are several options for lighting such as T5-HO, VHO, Metal Halide, Power Compact and more recently LED. The new LED set ups are rather expensive but they can save you money in the long run.

A little confused about my Marineland light

Well, it didn't come with a splash guard (my fault for not realizing that), so I was taking measurements to have one made of acrylic, when I saw this sticker on the back.

I thought, no way, I couldn't have screwed up that bad. I looked at the box and see this.

So along with the cracked housing that I assume occurred during shipping, do you think this warrants enough to return it to DFS? The Nova Extreme T-5 with moon lights, splash guard, legs, AND multiple plugs to put the different lights on timers...for only $12 more? Do you think I would have to pay s/h my way? I got this one because it was recommended as a better fixture by my LFS and it was on sale, now all this I'm finding out...I think I would have been better off with the Nova. Any opinions? I may call DFS today or tomorrow.

I guess it's ideal so long as you have a glass cover? Kind of defeats its porpuse as the glass will diffuse some of the light it gives off making it less effective.

Well already got off the phone with DFS. First off great company and great service (which is why I continue to do business with them). They're sending me a pre-paid label for the light to send back, and when I asked about upgrading to the Nova Extreme T5, she talked with a tech for a min and said they could upgrade to the other light at no charge since it was advertised one way and says another, and I likely would not have bought it for my purposes if I had known that (true, and I really wouldn't have had a problem paying the extra $10). They're sending that out today with my return label even before I send in my old light. Overall, great experience. At least some companies still know how to do business in this country.

There are a few still left who actually understand the long term benefit of treating their customers fairly. Glad to hear that they're treating you right.

You'll be happy with those light too, I think that's the same one I have, actually two for my 72" long 210 Aq. The only thing is the lights for one of mine went out already, atleast 3 of the four and when I bought the replacements, they are much brighter and better looking than the shipment standard. I got those from DFS too. Actinic White and Aquasun mixed and it's a much brighter difference in comparison to the one I have placed next to it.
