MH...too good to be true?
I was wondering of some of you guys could help me with my lighting needs. I have a new 60 gallon tank and will be starting a reef set-up eventually. I understand the importance of good lighting....would this meet my needs or is the price too good to be true? Please check it out and let me know.

Couldn't verify link (had to view cached version from work), someone had it in this forum. Looks like page 7 or later will have your "review" or at least what they think of it.

Sorry if that doesn't help.

They have some great pricing, but I have been a little shy because if you do some internet research on the odyssea lights you will find references to fires and melting ballasts and the like. If anyone knows anything more about that, I'd love to hear it.

smgonzo13,
Sorry I didn't reply sooner ! I've been on vacation. OK back on topic. That company is legit. I have the 36" version for about a year. I think I talked Rbacchiega into buying one. Great starter MH fixtures. The only downside in the stock ballast that comes with these fixtures. They are underpowered and should be replaced. I use a CoralVue ballast now. As for the "burning the house down" links on the Internet .... These were Odyssea's first generation lights that use (old style) magnetic ballasts. The new one use electric ballasts now, much cooler ! ( magnetic ballasts run very hot )

Thank you everybody for the quick replies. Looks like I will take a chance on it since you guys personally have one and give it good reviews. I know cutting corners when it comes to equipment is not the right way to go, so that is why I wanted some advice on this lighting. Thanks again for the input.

I recieved the Metal Halide last night and I love it. When the bulbs turned fully on all my fish came out and the anenome just went crazy, they were really happy. My only problem is that I'm not sure if I can keep the hood over the tank due to the MH getting too hot? It has two internal fans, but the hood traps the heat. Any suggestions?

Is your water temp raising ? I raised my lights by using 1/4" x 2" wood boards. Do you have a tank cover on you aquarium ( i.e. glass cover). I run a open top aquarium to vent the heat.

there are a few options like agsansoo said. I have a glass top on mine, to help stop so much evaporation, and right now am doing okay in terms of temperature, but if need be, you can also look at aquarium chillers. The inline ones are insanely expensive and if you're only running a few degrees above where you need to be, you might be able to use what's called a "drop in" chiller. They are far less expensive and you literally can just drop them into your sump in one of the chambers and it should do the trick.
best of luck

The water temp is doing just fine. I do have a glass top as well and the MH is sitting on top of it. No problems there. The problem I'm having is that I have a hood that's suppose to sit on top of the tank (looks really nice), but it's not enough ventilation for the MH to stay cool. Do you think I should purchase more fans to keep the MH cool so I can keep the hood on top of the tank?

Can you describe how you anenome went crazy for the lights. It sounds interesting and I'm trying to imagine it my head. I'm thinking of going with T5 HO to be retrofitted atop my canopy. I haven't done it yet. Also my LFS said the Actinic bulb will only bring out the color and if I wanted it might be best to do both 10000K bulb HO for the anenome.

What I meant was that it fully bloomed very quickly when the lights came on. The anenome seems very happy in my tank and it loves shrimp.
