And This is why I Love Ebay
So, in deciding I wanted a biger SW tank, something 48 inches long so I can have a yellow tang, I found a 48" Metal Halide System with a total output of 760W. It houses (and comes with)
(2) 250W DE HQI
(4) 65W Compact Flourescents
(6) Dual Bluemoon LED
all for just over 400 after shipping. Retail for that here in Calgary is well over 800 dollars NOT INCLUDING BULBS
Wooooo for internet shopping!
Oh, and I figure this is the perfect setup for eventual corals too

Congratulations on your winning bid! You were lucky to find a glass tank that was able to be shipped. Most are just local pickup. Good for you!!
Sounds wonderful...

I second that on the shipping part. Most I've seen wouldn't do shipping.
Congrats on winning the auction.

The tank I bought here in calgary...a guy had it custom built but they drilled it and put the overflow in the wrong corner. So now I have a brand spanking new 90 gallon with overflow and pre drilled .... for 350.

Those are Odyssea lights ! I have the 36" model. Great light fixture. Only one thing you will need to change. The stock ballast is under powered. I change my to a CoralVue ballast. It's a lot better than the stock Odyssea ballast the fixtures come with. Also my friends are recommending the IceCap 250 Watt Electronic Metal Halide/ HQI Ballast too !

So got an email from Ebay today, that deal fell through and I was credited my money back GRRRRRRRRRRRRR>
But I won a 48 in 260 watt power compact unit....which is good for soft corals (from what I've read) but what about LPS like I wanted? Or should I just suck it up and go with Soft Corals and my anenome....?

260 watts on a 90 gallon tank is a little underpowered. Polyps and some soft corals would be fine. As far as LPS, there are a few that you can probably keep, but the list will not be a long one. Tube coral would be one (I believe Agsansoo has a tube coral and could tell you about them), possibly fox coral. There are quite a few LPS corals that need "moderate" lighting...plates, brains, bubbles, etc...that MAY do alright IF you can get them placed pretty high up in the tank close to the lights. I would tread slowly on that though until you are sure they can handle it.

That's what I thought. I called the guy at the LFS store I'm now becoming a regular member at and he says that with that wattage I should just stick with Soft Corals, seeing how it's only 2.9 watts per gallon and power compact flourescents.

What if I got two of these units? That's 520 watts over 90 gallons which is 5.7 watts per gallon? Would this be good enough for LPS? or just better for soft corals?

I would be more confident with 520 watts. I think you would be ok with any classified as needing "moderate" lighting. Keep in mind too, the watts per gallon thing is a guideline, but is not perfect. The depth of your tank, as well as where within the water collumn you place a coral can either offset "weak" lighting, or make its effects worse.

I"ll keep that in mind....maybe I"ll just use this unit on a different tank (discus maybe?!?!) and suck it up and pay the 700 at the lfs for the mh model they have

If you can swing the expense, that would be a great move. It would give you a lot more flexibility as to what you can keep.

I guess the other lights from ebay can go on the discus tank. I don't imagine power compacts, lunar lights etc will harm them. will they?

I'm having them shipped to my mothers house, as I am leaving on Wednesday and wont be back until January 30th. So for the time being, the 90 gallon is at a standstill and will resume when I get back
