Saltwater newbie question

Hey, I'm about to dive into saltwater(figuratively)...
and I have a newbie question.
I'm checking out systems on craigslist and found a 38 gallon tank called a "reef setup" by the guy, but has no sump. it has a JBJ reaction 4 stage canister filter with UV sterilization.
With this filter and enough live rock would a sump be necessary if I wanted to keep coral? Is the additional water volume needed with this kind of filtration.

Thanks!

What kind of lighting does the tank have? It all depends on what kind of corals you want to keep.

Some people don't even use a sump or filter at all for reef tanks. The live rock and powerheads do all the work.
Your corals will depend on your water chemistry, flow, and lighting.
Metal hailides are awsome for most types of corals. If you want a softy tank (zos/mushrooms) power compacts will do the trick.

Sumps are not necessary, they are places to hide equipment like heaters, skimmers, media reactors, to keep the tank looking clean and uncluttered, and provide additional volume.

The live rock will provide filtration but if you want corals you will likely need a skimmer. Most corals like pristine water while other corals like Xenia and anthelia can be happy in dirtier water.
