Wet/Dry overflow filter

How is an overflow with the wet/dry filter an effective form of filtration? The only water that gets filtered is the top layer since that is the water that is the water filling into the overflow. With a power filter you have to tube that sticks down to the middle of the tank and filters from there which would make more sense? I'm not that worried because i have 80 pounds of live sand along with the filter but i'm just interested to see

Really? Mine just has cuts in it at the top that extend down about an inch and a half sort of like the tower of a castle

A wet-dry filter skims the water off the surface.Which is where a lot of organics
accumulate. That is why Protein Skimmers are best used with a overflow or a pump
near the surface. When the water returns to the tank it mixes with the water in the
tank.Replacing the water on the top.Sense the water is always mixing it's not just
taking water from the top.
