Yup, it is. It is jungle out thee. LOL!
I, myself read an article about nirospira over nitrobacter. To me, i'd have them fight over which. As long as the knowledge we have so far can keep the tank going and have done for many decades, nomenclature is not important to me, IMHO.
As far as recommendation by mfgr, I still say they should post thier experiment results thus informing consumers. Consumers then can decided the direction they want/desire.
If I was marketing director, would let consumer know how much testings are performed to derive the quality product the Co. has produced. I dont think hobbyist should be doing all the calculation on the products to maximize its effectiveness unless disired.
Cerianthus - no i agree nomenclature is not important, but when the peolple making product decisions or marketing products that take a divergent view with the community (birospira/TSS) then it can make it difficult. I remember when biro-spira and the scientist/biologist behind it made his claims - alot of discussion on it for some time, he however discussed it with people and made his science know behind his postualtions - unfortunately, this is not how most of the industry does it.

tetra safe start - used to be bio spira for FW aquarium nitrospira sp bacteria instead of nitrosomas sp. TSS doesn't require refrigeration - so tetra says.

It is work for me to keep up with all abbreviation, lol! Thanx. i belileve Nitrosomonas still stand as far as NH3 is concerned but nitrobacter (NO2 oxidizing bacteria) seemed to be in question as Nitrospira has emerged.
Either way, I dont believe in all these capped off products on shelves except Turbo Start which is shipped overnight and have to be kept refrigerated for 3 month to be effective. ALthough never tried Turbo Start, it is somewhat similar to one I have tried from Lab shipped overnight. Maybe one day, Ill try Turbos or TSS's efectiveness but someone who will use water/live sand ,nowdays (very cost effective, lol) directly from Ocean myself, dont know when. I do remember going back about 20 yrs, lab shipment were hit and miss since lots factors were involved such as temp etc. I am sure shipping is more accurate w/ better handling now than 20 yrs ago. But when it worked, it did work well.
Each Lab bacteria were shipped separate time frame since nitrobacter were inactiveactive w/ presence NH3. I believe it was 3 days later.
Just want to share my thought! Good night!
