Thanks midnightwolf - I did look on petfinder and have contacted a couple of rescues in my area that are going to try and help me!

I have looking up suitable cages and acessories to - thanks for the list that is really helpful.

I haven;t told my husband yet - nor anyone else. I think if I mention it's a rat people will freak until they see their dear sweet little faces.

I did have 2 gerbils (Axl & Slash) living together and it was so interesting to watch the brothers play together and groom each other. Having 2 gerbils isn't much different than having just 1 when it comes to cleaning and supplying food/water. Don't ever get one of those plastic cages with all the tubes because they take forever to clean and gerbils tear them up. When I had 2 gerbils, I kept them in one of these cages and my dog bumped into one of the attachments and killed the gerbil that was inside the attachment. Now I just have Axl in a 10 gallon tank with a mesh lid. I have also trained my dog to stay out of the room containing Axl's cage.
