Guineas

My son wants a guinea pig for his 6th birthday. I'm sure Mom influenced him tremendously since he initially wanted a hamster. Who here has had a Guinea?

I've had all sorts of critters throughout my life, Dogs, cats, parakeets, snakes, gerbils, mice, rabbits, a skunk (**** cool pets!), a raccoon, chameleons, and fish tanks for over 30 years. But I don't know squat about guineas. Are they basically overgrown hamsters, which eat, poop and look like cute little balls of fur, but that's about it, or do they have a personality the way a cat or dog would? I won't get any peace in the house from the other humans here until the pig is home, so I guess I'm going out tomorrow and forking over a nice tanks worth of cash for one with cage and assorted . I have the sneaking suspicion it's going to end up as my pet though...

My girlfriend wants a guinea pig since cause she says she can't pet and cuddle with fish. So we have been looking into them. A good site I found is this one.

http://www.cavyspirit.com/care.htm

I bought the water bottle, food, dish, and house off Drs Foster & Smith with with some fish equipment that I needed also. And I'm making a 3' by 3' cage with the corigated plastic that the web site shows to use and some metal fencing from home depot. All in all turned out to be about $50 without the pig. Here is where they talk about making a cage:

From what I have read they are more social then hamsters. And they are not nocturnal like hamsters are suppose to be.

Yeah, I've been lurking over at Cavyspirits forum and trying to learn about this adorable little ball of fur. I have to say, I'm quite smitten with Waffle.

Guinea pigs are charming pets! I had one for 8 years and his name was William. He liked to lie on my lap like a cat, and when he needed to "go" he would tug on my sleeve so I could put him back in his cage. So cute.

That's great. Guinea pigs don't climb cage bars, so need a lot more floor space than some other rodents.

Waffle is adorable!
