Reverse Osmosis - Deionization Forum on reverse osmosis and deionization topics, also check out the Reverse Osmosis and Deionization Units article. Investing in an RO/DI water purification filter is well worth the cost. Using reverse osmosis filtered water for top-offs and water changes will go a long way in helping with nuisance algae problems.

Which RO/DI to get?

Im thinking about getting an RO/DI system from: http://www.thefilterguys.biz/

Which one should I consider getting? My current tank is a 29 gallon and I plan on getting a 125 or 180 gallon tank in the future.

What are some things I should look out for when shopping for an RO/DI system?

Thanks everyone!

I got my 150 GPD unit from there for $95 shipped (it was on their eBay store). I can fill my 18 gallon container in just over 3 hours. Basically you're looking for a 0ppm unit, at least 4-5 stage.

That place is very cheap!Do their units work?! I'm in need of one since I'm having moderate algae problems and I'm getting corals VERY soon, so I want the water to be at it's best!

Yup, they work fine. At least mine is working great. There were a few leaks on some fittings, but nothing re-wrapping fittings in teflon tape won't fix. Also very easy to install if you have a 1/4" drill bit for the drain. I have mine mounted under the kitchen sink. I'm planning to run the tubing behind the dishwashwer and fridge, through the wall behind the tank hooked up to a container for top off water and kalk feed. 2 float switches in the container will hook into a solenoid in front of the RO/DI unit and turn the solenoid off when the container is full (one float switch is for back up).

I just got my float switches today, about $6 each on eBay with free shipping. 2 for the container and 2 for the sump hooked in series so as long as one trips, no overfilling.

thanks for the link! I ended up buying their Zero 0 PPM RO+(2) DI +Tank reverse osmosis Water Filter.

Hopefully it does the trick. Is there anything I should know about them before I get it?

both of those sites have good prices. Dragonbear, you'll also need a Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) meter to test the output water every once in a while to see when the filters need replacing.

when should the filters be replaced? I've read that anything under 10 ppm is okay. Is there a "magic" number to stay under to keep corals and fish happy?

Thanks!

Umm, aim for 0ppm. 1-2ppm will be alright, anything over 4 and you will want to replace a filter.

The filters get replaced at different intervals depending on how much you use them. I don't have the numbers off hand, but I should be able to locate them later, I'm just heading out to work.

True, and it also depends on what kind of is in your tap water to begin with, LOL.

rado316- I have never used the Kent RO/DI so I can't say anything about it either way, but I have the Coralife 50 GPD and it's just ok. I wouldn't really recommend it for the price. I know there are much better units out there for the money.
