Reverse Osmosis - Deionization Forum on reverse osmosis and deionization topics, also check out the Reverse Osmosis and Deionization Units article. Investing in an RO/DI water purification filter is well worth the cost. Using reverse osmosis filtered water for top-offs and water changes will go a long way in helping with nuisance algae problems.

flush

does anybody no how to flush the Coralife Pure-Flo II RO Units

INFO:Produce clean, pure water from chlorinated or non-chlorinated source water. Premium Thin Film Composite (TFC) units remove up to 99% of hardness, heavy metals, toxins, and many other impurities. Economical and easy-to-use units are wall mountable. Do not require separate flush kit - simply switch the two outlet fittings. 4-stage RO/DI unit with mixed-bed resin deionization cartridge removes any additional impurities to produce 99.9% pure water. Pure-Flo II with RO pump is perfect for areas with low water pressure. Integrated diaphragm pump increases water pressure to maximize production without having to purchase a separate RO pump.

All you should have to do is put the "In" tube on the "out" fitting and the "out" tube on the "in" fitting, based on the info you posted.

Flushing the unit means to apply full incoming pressure across the membrane for a period of time.

DFS has a flush kit by Kent Marine, though it's quite overpriced.
I'd get one from The Filter Guys, RO/DI Add-Ons. Part way down the page is the item.
(Disclosure: I just bought an RO system from them, very fair prices, good service and quick shipping; I recommend them)

They will tell you how to install it if you ask and they should send you instructions with an order.

Basically, the flush kit goes in the waste water line in parallel with the flow restrictor, just like in the picture.
To flush the membrane, you open the valve.
What you are doing is bypassing the flow restrictor and allowing full input pressure to go across the membrane and dislodge the stuff on it.
This increases membrane life by preventing all the you're taking out of the water to embed in or otherwise clog the membrane and washing it out the waste water line.

You may be able to find parts to make your own at a big-box/hardware store.

Filter Guys also have a fancy automatic valve that replaces the flow restrictor and will flush the membrane for like 30 seconds every hour. It's kinda pricey though, I think $50 for the valve and $30 for the transformer. That should be on the 'Booster Pumps' page.

Also, if you have plants, I hear that the waste water is good for them. Just because it's called 'waste water' doesn't mean it isn't good for something, I guess.

Wyphy, if you read the info for the RO unit (first post) there is no need for a separate kit. There should just be a way to switch the fittings around. I could have sworn it was just a need to reverse the in/out tubes, but I'm not positive about that.

Yeah, I looked at the units at DFS before I bought mine, and I remember something about that being stated.
It basically does the same thing, takes the flow restrictor out of line.

The reason I wouldn't want to do it that way is you have to change the hoses around, which can be hard to do since they are in kind of a tight space; and, when you remove the hoses, you'll get 'leaks' from whatever water is airlocked in the hose and fittings and probably some from the membrane. Not a big mess, but less convenient in my opinion.
Also, you can't accidentally try to flush it with the incoming water on, which would definitely be an annoyance.

Maybe isn't an issue if the system is set up in an unfinished room of the house, especially with a floor drain, but mine has to be in the laundry room and there isn't a drain, and it's difficult to clean up spills under the washer.

-Edit-
I see the link from lew, and that is what I read before.
Having to wrench loose the fittings and re-teflon them would get old pretty quick, I think.
Also, I would flush more frequently than every six months/1000G. I just set mine up, but every time I start filling, I'll just flush for the 20 seconds and be done.
And wow, their replacement filters/membranes are kinda pricey.
