Reverse Osmosis - Deionization Forum on reverse osmosis and deionization topics, also check out the Reverse Osmosis and Deionization Units article. Investing in an RO/DI water purification filter is well worth the cost. Using reverse osmosis filtered water for top-offs and water changes will go a long way in helping with nuisance algae problems.

Other option over RO/DI System

I found this product on marinedepot.com and was wondering if this would be a suitable option over a more expensive RO/DI unit costing hundreds?

I've never used them but have heard from others that they have to be replaced often.

Actually i have used this years ago and since our water is hard and there are a lot of disolved solids, it required frequent filter changes and resin chamber changes. As Butterfly said it can get to be quite expensive. In the long run, since RO systems are getting cheaper, the tap water system ends up being more expensive and time consuming.

Those filters can exhaust very quickly depending on what's in your water.
I've seen comments from some who have very good water that they'll get more than 200G from one filter; others say they've gotten the 'minimum' of 25G.
If you have a GH test kit, see what your results are. If they're very low, then you could get by with that filter.

I just bought (today) an RO kit from The Filter Guys, but have heard many good things about them.
We exchanged a few mails and I phoned for a couple last questions and to order, and they were very helpful.
Their basic 75GPD full size DI system, the OCEAN WAVE+, is $160, and the upgraded OCEAN REEF +1 is a very good deal.

The other plus to those systems is that you can make your own RO drinking water for pennies per gallon, and is part of the reason I bought one.
I also hear that the waste water is great for watering plants, so you don't have to just toss it all down the drain.

General Hardness.
You can test for general hardness and carbonate hardness (KH).

GH is basicaly a test of how 'hard' your water is, how much dissolved minerals are in it (mostly calcium and magnesium), and doesn't give any specifics as to what the minerals are. You can get other kits to test for the amounts of various other minerals; check the saltwater test kit sections at online shops or local stores.

KH is a measure of the carbonates and bicarbonates in the water, which affect buffering, or the ability to resist changes in pH.
