Reverse Osmosis - Deionization Forum on reverse osmosis and deionization topics, also check out the Reverse Osmosis and Deionization Units article. Investing in an RO/DI water purification filter is well worth the cost. Using reverse osmosis filtered water for top-offs and water changes will go a long way in helping with nuisance algae problems.

RO water measures TDS = 23

About 6 months ago, I picked up a RO/DI unit from my LFS that had really good sale. It's a Coralife Pure-Flo II 4 stage (3 + DI unit) which was like $120 or so. One of the things I requested from Santa (ok...the wifey) was the Hanna TDS/pH meter. So I start checking my water now have this nice new toy.

Water out of the tap is 50 PPM for TDS. After running water through the RO/DI, it's 23 ppm. Now I'm pretty sure that number should be under 5. Now I have a pretty bad algae/cynobacteria problem. I'm guessing some of that is due to my RO/DI unit not working quite right.

Suggestions? I'm guessing replacing filters if the obvious choice.

BTW, here's the answer. I replaced micron filter, carbon block filter and the dionizer filter. Didn't have to replace the very expensive membrane filter ($90 at my local LFS). My TDS now reads 1 ppm.

Time to make some new SW and start off with a 15 gallon water change.

Straight out of the tap mine is about 110 with the TDS meter, after filtering by the RO unit the TDS meter measures around 5 to 7.

Thanks for posting what you found out to fix your problem. Maybe it'll help someone else with a similar problem in the future.

Thanks,
Mike

My tap water isn't that bad. It's about 53 ppm or so. But with doing water changes with the levels I was getting, I currently have a nice cynobacteria outbreak. Hopefully now that my water is in far better shape, I'll slowly be able to get rid of the stuff.
