Substrates (the never ending issue)

Ok, so we all know of the typical thread that asks what substrates you use and what you recommend. Hopefully this one doesn't turn into the same thing. I wanted to ask which substrates you've gotten in trouble for in forums (as people harshly criticizing you) but have used quite successfully and which substrates have you used unsuccessfully as in you had major problems.

Me, I've been slightly criticized for using sand (for my leopard gecko). I didn't use it long though, but in the short time I did, people were picky. When I told them I use walnut shells [the ground sort that r-zilla makes, called Desert Blend] for my beardies, people were also unusually harsh sometimes. I guess some people just like being mean when you don't use anything but carpet or paper towels for all reptiles. Thats just weird. But hey, if I use these things successfully whats wrong with that?

Hi there! I can only tell how stupid I was when I was younger... I cough myself a scorpion and was looking for some nice soft sand for it... thinking sea sand will be great I got that for him... needless to say he died ... I only found out later that the salt in the sand was way too much for the poor guy... urg! - hey I was only 13... what did I know?

I would check out foster and smiths website and look for a reptile sand. The only critter I kept I just got dirt from the back yard for (but it was a toad from my back yard). I didn't dare tell the froggie people thats what I used, even if it was from the little ones natural habitat.

I hope you werent "harshly" criticized here I have a leopard gecko and have used sand for 5 years for her...she loves it...I get play sand from walmart or lowes...what works for some, doesnt always work for others

You know I read the ingredients to one of the expensive "rep sands" and it was quartz sand. I would say that whatever you get at lowes (play sand) will be quartz as well. I don't see the problem with it.
