I had a visitor today.

We had fire ants last year and I was out dosing the few hills I found when I absolutely walked up on a snake. He didn't more, just laid there and i ran to get my camera (now you KNOW i don't have any sense) and took his pic. Turns out it is a speckled King snake, very pretty and non-venomous. He was black with tiny yellow dots on him and about two foot long.
Here is his pic, it's not very good because he was laying in the grass and not in the mood to pose

Cool.
You think you've got no sense. I'd have picked the thing up if it was in a friendly mood. I also make it a point to know about poisonous animals in areas that I am likely to run into them, and would not go near a venomous snake.

And if you think I've got no sense, I've seen people prodding at a black snake in FL, trying to figure out if it was a cottonmouth or the non-poisonous mimic.

I know what you mean I have a habit of doing things like that too but hubby would freak(he doesn't do snakes well) when he found out and I would just HAVE to tell him when he gets in from work. So I was a good girl and just took his pic. He wasn't scared or aggressive in any way. Guess he knows we make it a practice to let all the critters on our property be.
Yes Lucy glad I didn't step on him also he might have been a bit peeved
Wasn't sure what he was until I checked our states snakes for ID but his nose was shaped all wrong to be venomous.

Best way Ive seen to tell if its a cottonmouth is to prod it. They are all bark and no bite. I once heard about a group of college kids that thought they were catching black snakes in what my uncle called "the bottoms" or for you non-kentuckians a swamp. They caught about 115 in about 2 hours before my uncle got down there to warn them there were cottonmouths in the area. They were all cottonmouths and no one got tagged.

This reminds me I need to go back down there and dredge the cut in the land to see if I cant net any cool prehistoric fish that hatched out from some old nest. They called them black fish, but they looked sort of like a celacamp (sp?). I will try and get down after I get married and see what I cant turn up, Ive caught dozens on artificial lures and threw them back before I got interested in aquatic animals.

Hubbys home now and reminded me of when we first got married 40 some odd years ago (and not as versed in the out doors as I am now ) when picking up large rocks around a new house and the jar of fishing "worms" I had waiting for him when he got home from work. They turned out to be copperhead babies who knew! boy did I hear it

They may be pretty laid back as far as snakes go, but they're far from "no bite." Any snake that is bothered may bite. There are generally a few cottonmouth bites reported in Florida every year, and, since stepping on a cottonmouth rarely results in a bite, I'd bet that purposeful aggravation or even handling are the most common causes. Even the most good-natured snake will take a shot at someone who is really bothering it, and, like our fish, each snake is an individual. There's no way of knowing if the snake had already been pestered that day, or if it is just in a foul mood for no reason.

Unless you're an expert who needs to identify a potentially venomous snake, the best method of dealing with such a creature is to leave it alone.
