Messy dirty smelly and green: My turtles tank, help me choose the right filter

I have already spent well over $400 in filters and all of them have broke, causing our hallways to smell like turtle poop. They turn green within a week. It isnt in any direct sunlight. The room its in has one window in this small tunnel like area. The tank is 3' on length, 1 1/2' in width, and 1' tall. My turtle is a full grown red eared slider. My budget is about $65 or less. I have only 1 basking lamp that is 60 watts. Its on for about 10 hours a day and the tank still turns green. He eats all of his food. Please respond.

Nothing short of massive ( 75% +) weekly water changes will keep down the smell.

Full grown = how big?

Re: Messy dirty smelly and green: My turtles tank, help me choose the right filter

It takes a humongous effort to change his tank. My turtle is 5-6 years old and is 5" wide and 6 1/2" long. I am currently changing the water by 50% every 2 weeks. Yet another filter has broken down due to his poop. Everytime I buy a new filter I replace all the water and the filter still ends up either not clean as much as it should and later breaks down, or it just breaks down. Can u recommend a filter that will minimize on the breaking part plz?

No filter designed for a fish tank can handle the amount of waste a turtle puts out.

Hopefully, Gunnie will stop by this post as she has a turtle.

Re: Messy dirty smelly and green: My turtles tank, help me choose the right filter

I have an adult RES in a 29 gal. tank and have to do a 100% water change weekly. I use this filter

in the tank and have it set up so it circulates the water in a circle around the tank. If the sponge gets clogged, you can simply pull it off and rinse it if you need to. I don't have mine set up to an ugf like the picture shows. I have it set up to suck the water in through the sponge, and out from where the tube is that is connected to the ugf in the picture. I have it running just like a normal powerhead would be set up in a tank with fish in it, except it's got the big sponge on the intake. His tank water still discolors, but all the solid waste and uneaten food is collected on the sponge.
