Refugium Forum - Hang On Tank Refugium. A refugium is used to grow macro algae and smaller organisms (like amphipods and copepods) for the animals in the main tank. You can also use the refugium as an algae filter. As the macro algae grows it uses nitrates and phosphates and you can crop the algae as needed. The macro algae in the refugium will help keep nuisance algae from growing in the display tank (if the refugium is attached to the main system).

Wondering about my DIY Refugium Plan

I'm hoping to get some feedback on my plan for a modified in-tank refugium. The plan is to have an overflow box on my 29g SW tank. I will not have the overflow box running, so I figure, I could put chaeto, some sand, and LR rubble, into the plastic container of the overflow box that is in the tank. Water would be able to pass in and out of the slits in the overflow. Thanks to anyone that replies.

Depending on the size of the overflow, this could be a really neat idea. Just make sure there's no way a siphon could accidentally start in the overflow box (if an overflow box is what I think it is).

If you don't mind seeing it inside the tank, I don't see why it wouldn't work as a refugium of sorts. I don't think you would see any sort of drastic results but it would definitely be a plus in my opinion. The bigger fuge the better for growing larger amounts of chaeto and competing with algae inside the main tank.
