Purchasing a RTS for the first time.

I'm considering purchasing a RTS and have a few questions.

First what are some reccommended tankmates for him? I currently have a 10 gal tank prepared to put him in but with in the next few months I'll have a 55 gal tank set up. So what can I put in with him now and what can I put in the other tank?

I think I've got everything else covered but is there anything I should know beforehand?

Mostly I'm concerned with who he'd be compatible with.

I wouldn't keep a RTS shark in a 10 gallon even with plans to upgrade. These fish are active swimmers, and very territorial. It would stress them to be in such a small tank for any length of time IMO. I'd recommend waiting to buy a RTS until the 55 is set up.

It says on your tank info that you currently have 2 bettas in the 10 gallon? If this is true then I would suggest waiting for the 55 gallon. If the 10 gallon is empty then using it for a short time while you set up your tank (like a Q tank) would work.

I currently have a 55 gallon with a RTS and Rainbow fish (not the sharks... but some really colorful shoaling fish from Australia) and it is a really cool set up. I've also heard that some loaches work great with RTS... although I have no experience with this personally.

Did you have any ideas? Or were you just thinking about setting up a tank around the RTS?

I agree, the 10g is way to small for a RTS. i wo uld wait until a bigger tank is avalible and cycled before I bought one.

I have an empty 10 gal for the RTS. And it'll be moved over with in the month.

I'm probably going to step up the tank around the RTS but rainbow fish were on my list so it's good to know they get along. I'm also a big fan of Oscars but due to their size they'd probably end up eating the RTS once they got large enough. So basically, I have no ideas. Just looking for suggestions.

I did the same... set up my tank around the RTS... but I have fallen in love with the rainbows. They are nice looking fish... they seem able to hold their own around the RTS... and I have a mix of different varieties and they all shoal together. I'm planning on keeping 6 rainbows and a shoal of the smaller threadfin or celebes rainbows as well in my 55 gallon. That said the RTS is still my favorite fish in the tank. She is full of surprises and fun to watch.

Like I said I wouldn't keep a RTS in a 10 gallon for long... but lots of people keep 10 gallons as quarantine tanks... so if you are just quarantining your fish while you cycle your 55 gallon you should be great.

Good luck.
