IMO, you should be able to add 1 and only 1 red tailed black shark.

I agree with Travie
you can add ONE red tail to your tank, as they are aggressive towards their own species and should always be kept as one per tank.

Shaz has 4 platy's and want to know about getting 1 shark if I'm reading the question right.

I don't know if the Platy's will be able to handle the shark once it's full grown. If this is for your 40 gal then the shark would love that room but he might be too agressive for your current occupants sorry.

thanks guys...
One of my platys just died, all of a sudden. I came back from work to find it motionless at the bottom. I had a feeling this may happen as this morning when i looked at it. It was just about staying upright, as it was falling to one side :-(.
It was fine a day ago, swimming across the back glass sheet quite cheerfully. I dont understand :-(. No sign of illness or disease etc.
This is the 2nd ive lost now since thursday night. 4 days ago. The first i lost on sunday morning, however that had a patch missing from the top right hand side part, inbetween the top fin and head.
This one took me by surprise. Could some one please help me? Why may this have happened. I thing it may have hit its head on the side glass while swimming around...
or do you think the itrduction of the red tailed shark yesterday morning stressed it out??

help ?? :-((

It's very possible. When did you introduce the shark and did you QT it?

Definitely only get one RTBS as they do tend to get more aggressive as they get older and be careful of what other fish you add to your tank as RBTS is very territorial and will chase and harass anything it thinks of as being competition. Hope this helps.
