Is my fish Taz or Tazalina???

Yes!!! We received "Taz" from a friend. Our fish is about 6 inches long. Well through the help of several people in this Forum and reading alot on Red Devil Chichlids we realized that he(she) likes to be alone. We even bought some goldfish (feeder fish) and two catfish. Not a good idea-they died (sick or too stressed out) and we wound up giving several away to friends. Yes we rearranged his "territory" before putting the fish in. He just chased them!!!
He is definately a loner. So we said OK no problem-we will keep him(her) alone. He is quite entertaining!!
Well today there is quite a large bunch of eggs in the tank along with some loose ones in his(her) cave. I noticed the past three days he(she) was doing flips in its home-not head over tails but rolling around from side to side. I said WOW what an entertaining fish!! Well I guess she was starting to pass the eggs Yes, No or maybe She really is not sick!! Looks healthy, colorful, no bumps, no diseases but is more agreesive then normal (imagine that one)!

OK- so Taz is really Tazalina right? Are the eggs fertile? What is the next step? If they are not fertile will she do this often? Does this mean that she is comfortable in her home?

Any answers, thoughts, suggestions or ideas are always welcome!!!

Thank you

if that is the only fish in the tank, they are infertile
the eggs will dissolve in a couple days
sounds like Tazalina likes her tank!

Thank you Kevin. Will she do this again? Also when she was rolling in her cave-was she passing the eggs or just playing? Thank you for your quick response!!!

My mother-in-law has a female red devil and she (the fish) only laid eggs 3 or 4 times.

For more on Tazalina's eggs---I scooped up the mass of eggs with a net and looked at them. I put the mass back into the tank. She covered them with a seashell. The next morning, the mass of eggs are not to be found!! I got a flashlight and looked in her cave and she had sprayed eggs all over the inside of her dwelling!!! On the walls and ceiling there are white and transparent eggs all over!! Apparently when she was turning around and around in the cave she was passing her eggs onto the inside of her dwelling. I think it is interesting. For anybody who is following this story---did she eat the bunch of eggs since they were disturbed? She also seems not to be eating. I would also like some suggestions on foods to feed her besides the Cichlid pellets. Hope you find our experience with Tazzy as fascinating as we do!!!

She probably did eat the eggs.

Veggie pellets, veggie wafers, algae wafers, shrimp pellets, earthworm pellets, and if you live near a co-op or Tractor Supply, Purina brand catfish chow.

Due to their sheer size they really need food with mass to it, such as pellets and wafers, rather than flake food.

Thank Chief Waterchanger! I will look into the food you suggested. Thanks everyone who helped me and I hope alot of people found this interesting and perhaps learned alot from our experience! Also I have read feed Red Devils hamburger meat and peas!!! OK, I can see raw hamburger meat-small amount, but raw peas Do I need to leave the pea whole? Good Idea? Bad Idea-or just stick to regular variety of fish food?

As always thanks again to everybody!!!

See Ya
