Electric Blue Rams

Went to the LFS to purchase some GRBs, and found Electric Blues. Picked up a couple of them. Not sure if they are both female or not. They've been in the tank for only a couple of hours and have already colored up!

They appear to be females, but if real young you may have to wait a bit. It can be hard to tell since they are solid blue. By the rounded fins, I would guess females for now.

That's what I was thinking too. They are very young, barely 1/2 inch long. One does appear to be more aggressive than the other, so time will tell. I was shocked to find them at the LFS.

Thank you. I'll post more pics once they settle down and develop their full colors. They're still shy and hard to get pics.

Congratulations!!!
Indeed, thay are beautiful fish, but for me you can't beat the subtle colors of the original RAMS from good breeders. (Just my preference)
That electric blue color is striking...thank goodness the prices are dropping. They were very high priced at first and males were not available....good way to keep the market... Since the sexes look so similar being solid blue some males eventually got thru to everyone!!

Aww I have 2 of these little guys and they seem to be a male and a female and they do act all cute together follow each other round and cosy up in a cave together. So fingers crossed they are a pair.
They are fish with attitude and funny little fish, gorgeous tho!

they are so cute. How big do they get? Can they go in a tank with smaller fish, like guppies and Glass tetras?

Thank you everyone. I tried to get more pictures, but they are darting around so much, that everything came out blurry. One of them is starting to display a vibrant purple color along with the blue.

As they are a new color strain of GBR. Here's the fact sheet on them http://www.fishlore.com/aquariummaga...am-cichlid.htm. I believe this strain averages 2 - 2.5 inches in length. One thing I do know is that GBRs tend to do better in low pH and high temperature. So, if you wanted to add them to a community tank, you'd need to thoroughly research your choices.

And, get ready for sticker shock! Because they are new and in limited supply, they can be costly. My LFS knows me and gave me a break (still $25 each) with the promise that if I end up with a breeding pair, that I sell the offspring to them. And, if both female, that I can trade one in if/when they get more.

I have My blue rams in a community tank and they are really calm fish. However when i had just one in a tank that one went out on a hunt the Cory mission and perused them constantly. On advice from the LFS they said try adding another, if that does not fix it bring the aggressive one back. The moment I added another, calm broke out thankfully, it was an instant fix they made a bee line for each other and have been together ever since. I have had my 2 blue rams since March the 9th and are still quite small just 1.5 inches but very very vivid colours one more so than the other. The fish I have in that community tank are as follows;-
2 redtail rainbow fish sex unknown but possibly a male and female,
1 blue gourami female,
1 pearl gourami female,
1 female betta,( please don't shoot me but she is best buddy's with blue gourami)
3 rummy nose tetra sex unknown,
2 albino cory's sex unknown possibly a pair,
2 julii cory's sex unkown,
1 cory that looks like a julli buts not lol sex unknown,
1 bronze cory sex unknown,
2 yoyo loaches sex unknown,
6 danio's sex unknown,
1 clown loach sex unknown,
1 golden nugget plecco female,
1 brochis sex unknown,

allibobs - that is good to know that Electric Blue Rams do well in a community tank.

Finally able to get a decent picture now that the fish have developed more color. They really stand out, even with Cherry Barbs in the QT tank.

They are very pretty, but I've still never seen one color strain that is as pretty as the original Ram.

Thank you redlesi and angelfish. I too like the GBRs, but like the EBRs just as much. Both are very colorful fish and easily stand out in a crowd.

As it's looking more and more like I've got a pair, I'm hoping I'll be able to breed them. Time will tell, they are too young for that still.

If your local market has them very high priced, I see a profitable hobby on your hands

They are still pricey in my around, running in the $30-$50 range. With a single pair, not sure how profitable it would be, but I still want to try. I also have 4 Koi Angels that I'm hoping to breed. They haven't yet paired off. I've only had them for 3 months now, so they are still too young as well.
