Sorry this is so long. Feel free to skip the background info and see the question at the bottom lol
I had one male and one female Blue Ram Cichlid in my 75 gallon planted tank. They were both very healthy with amazing coloring. I had had them a few months when they laid eggs on 4-25-09. They were doing a great job of defending the eggs with the male chasing off huge angels.
Of course, I got all excited and set up a 10 gallon for them. I used sand for the substrate and ran peat in the filter to lower the
pH and soften the water. The 10g was an established cycled tank I had been using for angel fry with the same parameters as the big tank. It had
driftwood and was heavily planted.
By 4-27-09 the angels in the 75g ate their eggs and I moved the ram pair to the 10 gallon. The male was fine in the 10 gallon. He stayed very colorful and active. The female lost most of her coloring in the smaller tank. I think she may have been stressed in the smaller tank because she couldn’t easily escape the male as he followed her around. I don’t think it was an acclimating thing because the water parameters were the same in both tanks and the male showed no signs of stress when I added the peat moss to the filter. I left them in there from 4-27-09 to about 5-15-09. I put them both back in the 75 gallon planted tank because the female was clearly not going to adjust to the smaller tank.
She just never seemed to recover once she was back in the big tank. She never regained her normal coloring, eventually started to get really thin and finally died in late in July.
The male is still doing great and I would like to get him a mate. My question is should I get one female or two or would I have better luck with a small school? My concern at this point is not really to get them to breed. I just really enjoy them.
