German Blue Rams Best male to female ratio

Sorry this is so long. Feel free to skip the background info and see the question at the bottom lol

I had one male and one female Blue Ram Cichlid in my 75 gallon planted tank. They were both very healthy with amazing coloring. I had had them a few months when they laid eggs on 4-25-09. They were doing a great job of defending the eggs with the male chasing off huge angels.

Of course, I got all excited and set up a 10 gallon for them. I used sand for the substrate and ran peat in the filter to lower the pH and soften the water. The 10g was an established cycled tank I had been using for angel fry with the same parameters as the big tank. It had driftwood and was heavily planted.

By 4-27-09 the angels in the 75g ate their eggs and I moved the ram pair to the 10 gallon. The male was fine in the 10 gallon. He stayed very colorful and active. The female lost most of her coloring in the smaller tank. I think she may have been stressed in the smaller tank because she couldn’t easily escape the male as he followed her around. I don’t think it was an acclimating thing because the water parameters were the same in both tanks and the male showed no signs of stress when I added the peat moss to the filter. I left them in there from 4-27-09 to about 5-15-09. I put them both back in the 75 gallon planted tank because the female was clearly not going to adjust to the smaller tank.

She just never seemed to recover once she was back in the big tank. She never regained her normal coloring, eventually started to get really thin and finally died in late in July.

The male is still doing great and I would like to get him a mate. My question is should I get one female or two or would I have better luck with a small school? My concern at this point is not really to get them to breed. I just really enjoy them.

Sorry you lost her.

I have a pair that are about 6 months old according to their size. I see what you mean by the male follows the female around. lol They are such a fun fish. They both all of a sudden got mouth fungus. I moved them to my 10-gal quartine and he doesn't like it. Hides in the log and comes out to only eat. As the female is cruising around the tank.

It's best to eather have on GBR or a pair. I would suggest to get 2 females and have him choose.....then take the other female back to the LFS. First ask if they will let you do that. If not then only get 1 female and hope for the best.

I'll probably end up getting two females if I ever find any. There is one female at a store near me but her color is bad like the one I had after it started going down hill. I think it's the same one that's been there for several months. Having to be a responsible fish keeper is no fun lol. I want to get a bunch of them. They are so pretty
