On Mother's Day my husband had gotten a pair of GBR's (among other fish) for me.

During the past week, I noticed they were being very territorial around a plant in my tank. I figured they were getting ready to spawn.

They were relentlessly stalking my DG and picking at him but were content to just chase the smaller fish away.
Poor Rommy the Dwarf Gourami, not that he didn't fight back at times. I felt bad for him and added more plants and that seemed to help.

Well, yesterday I noticed something wrong with the male GBR's mouth, looked like an injury. He was breathing heavy and not active.
Anyway, he was gone this morning.

I don't think I'll replace him, my tank is back to being peaceful again.

oh no!!!! im so so sorry didnt know gbr's were meanies...poor rommy probably isnt sad tho ....glad things are peaceful again!

Hi Lucy Im so sorry to hear about the GBR. I know that you have been wanting them for awhile now. But with one in the tank, peace should rein once again. Im surprised that they were fighting with your other fish. I have 5 of them in my 125 community tank and they never bother anyone. Im wondering if they had enough room in the 30g?

I don't think I'm going to replace him.

I had read that they could get agressive during spawning, but man. I guess the size of the DG threatened them more than the smaller fish which they would just chase away.
Maybe if I ever get the 30 long up, I'll think about another.

Thanks Alex, I know it stinks. I fell in love with these fish a long time ago and was thrilled to get them.
The female doesn't look as happy without him. No one to show off for I guess. lol

Sorry to hear about your GBR Lucy... That stinks RIP little guy. Its good that your tank is back to being peaceful though. I'm sure things are less stressful for you and the fishies.
