| Male and female? I just got two GBR's at my LFS I wanted to get one male and one female. I'm not too sire if they are both male in female, so I was wondering if anyone could back up. Here are two pics of them. It's only their third day so they are stil a little low on color:
This is the best I could do...sorry for the bad quality. |

| Looks to me like you've got a male and female.
1st picture:
Female: Round belly, pink colour on belly, smaller and stockier appearence, short second dorsal ray.
2nd picture:
Male: Belly more flat than rounded, no colour on belly, mole elongated appearence, long second dorsal ray. |

| ok thanks. Any tips on how i can make them most comfortable and possibly get them to pair. I don't want to force them 'to pair but if there were certain conditions needed, then I would be willing to create them. |

| My rams paired up for me with a pH of around 7.5 even though i believe they like it even lower than this, down to around 6.5 ph. they also like soft water |

| ok. I have a large and small piece of driftwood. So my PH is low and I'm pretty sure that my water is soft. I'll just wait and see. |

| today, day 5, female seems fine and eating...
However, the male is worrying me. He is dull in color, he's not mooving much, just resting on the bottom of the tank. I also noticed that his eye is losing it's red color. There's only a little red. he won't eat either.
It may be because i just turned the tank lights on, but there was light in the room already and the other fish are acting normally. what should I do? |

| Its normal for the colours to be dull when you turn the light on even if there was light in the room before. If i were you i would check your water parameters and then just see if anything is chasing him/ scaring him at all.
Good luck with the little guy |

| I will do some testing now. The water is a little cloudy, not sure why, but im sure the perameters are fine...I'll double check. There arn't any fish in there that would chase him... |

| Hmm, i cant see what could have made him go like this, does he still look ok (body still in shape, no marks, spots or grazes). |

| I dont see any marks and his body seems fine,it just started today.
He moved to under some driftwood, but he is still just sitting at the bottom. I dont think it water quality related because the other ram is swimming around merrily doing her own thing... I haveto leave for the day soon, so i won't be able to check up until later today. |

| He is just laying there, panting. His eye lost all color and is now dialated and black. I don't think he will makeit.
I heard that blue rams were sensitive and unpredictably this way for the first week. I think it's just him because everyone else in the tank is fine. |

| i'm sorry he isn't doing well GBRs are really sensitive to water conditions, which is unfortunate because they're such gorgeous fish |

| He passed away last night... I think he just didn't like the tank. The other one looks as happy as she can be. I may try to get another male in a week or so, to make sure my tank is fine... |

| any ideas as to why your water was cloudy? that might have something to do with it. also, what test kit are you using? |

| I am using API liquid test kit. I found that i just had a minor algae bloom. The female is still doing great. I went to the store and asked for a male. Got it acclimated and to me it looks like a female There are also no returns at that store
The older female keeps "chasing" the new one. I will just have to wait it out and see how it goes. I may be mistaken! |

| sorry for your loss also...maybe you should check the GH and kH...we went thru 4 pairs of rams and couldnt figure out why they were dying...until I did a kH and gH..ours was way too high for the rams to even be put in....gH should be between 50-100 and the kH should be over 100.... our gH was way too high and the kH was very low...so now we dont do gbr's anymore... |

| Hi meemee and wsjjqxiaq welcome to FishLore
Please check the date on the original thread, this one is pretty old.
I'm sure the OP has the gender figured out by now.
Thanks! |
