Pair of GBR Question.

Hey everyone. I was gonna get a pair of GBR for my 20 gallon tank. Could I be garentied a pair if I only got a male and female because I only have a 20 gallon and 12 gallon. No room for two males.
Thanks,
Joe

I'll be interested to see the answers you get to this question.

I've had a male and a female GBR in my tank for a few months. They seem to be doing really well. They're active and very colorful. No eggs yet though.

Good luck with your's if you decide to get them.

You wouldn't be garunteed a pair but there is a change they will pair off, if they do pair off and spawn thought they could get very protective over their eggs and cause havok in the tank, i dont think a 20 gallon is big enough for that, but more members will have more experience with GBR's than me

Whats your main reason for asking?

Are you attempting to get a breeding pair? If so, I don't think that there is any guarentee that picking up a male and female, that they will breed. You'd be better off getting a few of each sex, waiting for them to pair off themselves, and then rehome the remaining (if neccessary).

If you are just concerned about a peaceful setting, don't care whether or not they breed, but just want them to get along well then I would say just getting (1) of each would be okay. My experience is that even a non-breeding m/f pair will live peacefully together.

I may have spoke to soon. The two I have were busy clearing out a little ditch in the gravel. Don't know if that means I ended up with a mated pair after buying just two or even if that's breeding activity though.

Ok thanks everyone! I'm not looking to have them spawn (alhough that would be cool). I just don't want them killing eachother lol.

If thats all you want, a male and female would be fine

Mine seem to have lost interest in what I thought might be breeding activity. Oh well. They have never fought though so I would say you would be fine with just getting a male and female. Good Luck. You'll like them they are really pretty
