I'm considering adding either one or two Bolivian Rams to my 29g community. Out of all of the research I have done, I always hear of pairs of bolivians or pairs of GBRs, never anything about singles. Is this because they are better off in pairs? Is it that males show off their colors when there is a female around and breeding is imminent? Is it advantageous to have one or two? Pros/cons?

I've always kept Cichlids in pairs, even if they're same sex. They seem to like each others company. I'd get 2 if I were you, if you have space.

Watching them interact with each other is my favorite part of owning them, so I would suggest more than one.

you have enough space for two, they would be perfect for your 29 gallon.

I had one German Blue Ram once. (it died when I had a heater failure, and the tank got to cold) It was a VERY gorgeous fish, I would say it was probably the prettiest fish I ever had. It did kinda hang out by himself though, and looking back at it, I would say get 2 or more, not just one.
