blue ram behavior

I just got a blue ram yesterday and put him in my 55 gal tank because I was told it wouldn't eat my other fish and it was cheap. So I put him/her, don't know, in my tank and it just hides, I know this is normal for new fish for a day or two. It also clamps its tail fin together, it looks like that disease fin clamp or whatever it is. So I thought maybe he was sick so I put him in my quarintine tank and in like 15 minutes he looks normal. My 55 gal specs are 80F water temp 0 amm, 0 nitrites, 0 nitrates. My quarintine tank is about 72F water temp and zero everything but it has salt in it too. Will he be all right or should I leave him in the quarintine tank. Hes back in the big tank now.

Hi Lee, Welcome to fishlore!
It sounds to me that your GBR is just shy of his new surroundings and new tank mates. As long as you have plenty of hiding places for him I would leave him in the 55. He will get acclimated in time. For now he is just being cautious.
I think that moving him back and forth to different tanks will be more stressful on it. I would not use any salt either at this point as it just irritates their skin into producing more slim coat which is a protector. If he doesnt need it, I wouldnt use it.
You mentioned that your aquarium readings were all zero. Are you using test stripes or tube for water tests? You should be showing some nitrates if your tank is cycled.
Also you should be careful about the difference in water temps he has been in. One tank at 80*and the other at 72* can be a shock for him. Changes in temperatures should be done gradually.

Now that he has been in the big tank for like half a day he is swimming around a little and now his tail looks fine. I test ammonia and nitrites with a liquid tester and nitrates with the strip style and I don't think it is to accurate. And I was going to bring down my water temp to about 78F.
