Can we talk about food for German Blue Ram fry?

I thought I'd start a new thread as it's a slightly different subject...

Can anyone tell me what I should be trying to feed the fry when the fry's at week 1, fry's at week 2, etc... ?

My fry are exactly a week old and living in a breeding net. (I think that's the name of it.) They've been in there for about three days with some java moss. I removed them from the parents as I didn't want to lose them all. The fry population wasn't quite as large as when I went to bed the night before I removed them.

I wasn't too sure if the fry would live since they're so small. I boiled an egg and started to feed small bits of the yolk mixed in water to the fry. I didn't think they'd eat it, but today, the fry look a little bigger than I remember. I can see or make out their stomachs/bodies now.

I found a guy on ebay who sells microworms. Is that something I should be feeding the fry now (assuming that I can keep them alive)? I've never hatched brine shrimp before, and I don't think my fish store sell baby brine shrimp. Can I get away with continuing to feed the yolk to the fry until they're large enough to eat something else?

I'd appreciate all your advice and comments in advance.

Thanks!
Barbara

Petsmart should have some baby brine shrimp which is what you should be feeding them. If you cant find the BBS you can always try Daphnia for them, also in the frozen fish food section. Full of protein and very tiny for the small fish.

I don't have a Petsmart near my house, but I'll check my fish store for Daphnia. Thanks!

your welcome
Most fish stores will carry the frozen Daphnia, I hope that yours has it . Good luck with that.

I've had excellent luck using Hikari First Bites. You should be able to buy it at most pet stores. Also, if your LFS sells frozen fish foods, they should have frozen baby brine shrimp. If you are able to do it, try to feed the fry small meals at least four times a day. Good luck with your kids.

My fish guy/pet store doesn't carry Daphnia. He said that no one ever requests it. He also didn't carry baby brine shrimp, live or frozen. I decided to check out Petco and found frozen brine shrimp AND Hikari First Bites. After reading your comments, Mark, I'm really happy I listened to the Petco guy!! He recommended I buy that, too, for variety. I'm going to try and break up the brine shrimp into smaller bits, and hopefully, the fry will be able to consume that. I will try both in moderation.

Thank you so much for your help!!! I really appreciate it!

I fed mine thawed frozen Daphnia, Cyclops,Rotifers and Hikari first bites until the were big enough to eat thawed frozen blood worms. But the water quality has to stay really clean. So feed them before you do a water change as all of those can pollute the water if your not careful

Thanks for the heads up and menu for your fry! The fry didn't seem interested in the frozen brine shrimp bits but really seem interested in the Hikari First Bites!! They all went to the top of the water surface eating. It was great.

Thanks for your help and advice!! Hopefully, in a few weeks, I'll have bigger fry!
