I haven't posted here in over a month... I guess nothing exciting was going on with my fish and I got really busy at school. But today something very exciting happened! The background story is: In June I purchased what I thought to be a pair of
GBR's without doing my research. I ordered them through my
LFS and I requested a "pair of rams". I should have been more specific about what I meant by a pair. They got along fine untill about 6 weeks ago when one of the Rams began bullying the other and thats when I realized I had 2 males in a 26 gallon tank. I have a ton of plants so I thought it might be ok but one morning I noticed that the less aggressive male was missing nearly all of its dorsal and tail fin. I moved him to my 10 gallon immediately and hoped for the best.
Fast forward to now: My ram in the 10 gallon is doing great, he's grown back all his fins and chills out with the danios in his new permanant residence. I've been toying with the idea of finding a home for my aggressive male ram and keeping an angel in my 26 gallon. I've been feeling this way because I wanted a pair of rams in my tank, it was basically the reason I got the tank, and I felt like I'd never be able to find a female ram... UNTILL TODAY!
So I usually don't like to get fish at Petco or Petsmart.. I hear bad things on this site and I prefer to support the local business. Unfortunately my LFS doesn't carry frozen
krill that I like to feed my fish so I had to stop by petco. I was browsing the fish selection when to my amazement they had a tank full of German Blue Rams. I couldn't believe it. I was so suprised that my initial thought was, "wow, those cichilds looks just like rams". I looked closer (hoping in the back of my mind) only to realize that over half the tank was female rams. I still can't believe it. It was as though a light went off and everything I've read about sexing rams clicked. The females looked nothing like the males; shorter dorsal fin spikes, super round bodies, some of them even had the pink spot. It was unbelievable. I pulled an employee over and she let me scoop out the exact ram I wanted.
I'm so excited about this little lady that I even did drip-acclimation with her. She's obviously very young, she is probably 2/3 the size of my male. Right now she's swimming all around the tank, fins open, colors bright. She even ate some krill. I'm so happy and I hope that she makes it!!! Hooooooray!!!
