Bolivian Ram

I went to my LPS today and noticed that they had got in a batch of bolivian rams, which they called clown dwarf cichlids or something like that. I'm re-doing my tank and was wondering if instead of getting a dwarf gourami I could get a single bolivian ram. Do they work with bottom dwellers like cories? are they as sensitive as GBRs? Will one be fine in my 20 gallon high tank with cherry barbs, cories, a BN pleco, and a platy? thanks!

Hello Butters,

Yes you can get a single Bolivian Ram.
They are alright with bottom dwellers.
NO, they cannot be put together with any kind of barbs. Barbs will nip the fins of the Bolivian Butterfly.

Hope the above helps.

Are you sure? not even cherry barbs? I've never seen them nip any of my fish ever! thanks for the advice

Cherry barbs don't have the normal "barb" personality...they should be fine together.

Other than that I agree with Zeebo.

Make sure your Bolivian has places to hide though, or s/he will likely get stressed.

What's more better is you can put rams, and gouramis together!!

Rams are friendly, and one is good enough for a community tank.

At my pet store they have baby fishes and they keep a ram in with the small ones.

I have rams with my angels, and dwarf gouramis. I have small Australian Rainbows, and a large rainbow

Also, when I was talkin to Big Al's people.. they said get RO water, and then get angels, and rams then... you put cardinal tetras it's a great combination, and nothing wrong will happen.

You just need to have soft water.

If you don't have soft water, then the rams won't work for you. They reside in mainly fresh soft water.

If you have hard water. I suppose African Cichlids are you best choice, and maybe some hardy fishes like plecostomus, and some black skirt tetras along with glow light tetras
