pics of my new Ram

I am so in love with her! At least I think it is a female. I will try to post a picture of the fish and please let me know if you agree because I want to get a male for her. Would it matter if I get a long fin mate for her?

Sorry some pics are sideways.

Rams are so pretty, congratulations. I wish I could have them, but my water is too hard.
Sorry, I'm not good at sexing fish.

Good luck

Its been said that it is hard to find females as pet shops dont get them because they arent as colorful and therefore want sell as good as colorful males

That and I don't think females..... uhh... hatch as often as males so breeders keep females for their own breeding.

In a good LFS have a look for rams and look for, in order
Pink on belly

2nd or 3rd spike on dorsal fin will be a lot longer

And the fins under the belly (what are they called?) on the female will be dark almost black while the male will be orange-red. I haven't heard if this is 100% but it's true on my pair

I finally saw it's spikes and the third is longer, sometimes the belly seems orange maybe, and once I saw a brief flash of spangles on it's black spot. I want to pair it up but don't want to end up with two males.

keep searching. when you see a pink belly, buy it (unless it doesnt look healthy...)

the spangles in the black spot can help, but its not always a given... most ways arent 100% haha

My lfs gets them every week but they are shredded by the third day.

probably similiar to my lfs, they ONLY ever get males. 20 male cichlids of any kind in a 20 gallon tank isnt going to be a healthy environment at all, no wonder they're shredded by day 3
