Dwarf cichlids

Hi!

OK. Here's the thing. In my 47gal - I recently suffered the loss of 3 Sterba's corys (-7.5"), 3 Dwarf gouramis (-7.5") and 3 Hatchets (Replacing them soon!). So, right now I have 44" in there. My family? Desperate to replace the dead ones. Me? Well, it's a planted... Water quality is great, I now have a black sand substrate. Perfect for those fish I have always wanted... Dwarf cichlids!
At my LFS - they have a tank full of Panda apistos, and another of GBR's. I'm thinking this: 2 Female Pandas, and a male/female pair of GBR's. I have lots of caves, obviously lots of plants (Especially fine leaved Cabomba type ones), what could go wrong? It would mean 54" of fish in a 47gal tank - 7" overstocked (In a Planted tank). But - this is a general rule of thumb. I know it does not account for the territorial fish. Being no expert on Dwarf cichlids; I was just wandering what you lot think? Would it work do you reckon? See my 'My tanks' post in my sig for more info on this tank.

Apistos and Rams become territorial while breeding/raising young. It might be ok since you have lot of plants and caves. But to be on safer side, I'd go for just Male Ram + Female Apistos (OR) Ram Pair.

Rams are very picky about water parameters and such things. I just, recently, lost my last one. I'm not on replacing them, just because of that pickiness.

I haven't tried Apistos, but I do want to.

You could get, as another option, Kribensis. They are very colorful, inquisitive fish. I have 4 in a 20 gallon. You just need coconut shells for them to spawn in. Yet another option would multis, shell dwelling cichlids, if you can find them. They can be difficult to locate. They are a harrem breeder, so get lots of females.

Hi Hatchet
Most apisto's do not do well with cories in the tank. This being that the apisto's and rams are bottom dwellers whereas the cories are also. This is what I read up on in a forum for nothing but apistos. The Panda apisto is less demanding of its water chemistry than the other of its species. I think that if you had the GBRs in your tank as well, and you kept up on the water changes etc, which Im sure you would, I dont see any reason why your choice of fish wouldnt work. Just as I mentioned, the bottom dwellers you have in the list.. can make it iffy.

Hi!

Well, the reason I was thinking female Aps is so they don't spawn. Would it be a better idea to have both GBR's female as well? I've been reading up on Dwarf cichlids and from what I've read, they're only really aggressive to other Dwarfs... I did think that Corys might annoy them a bit but from what I've read it can work out. I think I'll get all females to stop them spawning - I prefer the colours of the girls on both species.

I think I'll go with what I said just then - and watch for friction... If anything... Nasty happens I always have a QT. Of course, if the Corys really do start being a problem then there's always Malachai - he's going back in the 7.5gal soon.

I like Kribs - I was considering them a while back, but I really love GBR's and Panda's.

How do you guys think a 67gal tank with caves made out of rocks and overturned plant pots will house 3 dwarf cichlid pairs (rams, golden eye cichlid and aggazzi cichlids as well as 5 cories? Only other bottom dweller would be an eel or 2 which keep to themselves. I'm thinking of restocking and have a thread on it here

Thanks, (hope you dont mind my asking in your thread hatchet!)

Hi!

No worries. Means more DC info for me!

My new plan: A pair of Rams (They shouldn't spawn - they need a flat rock for that. Now, I don't see a flat rock in my tank...) and a female Panda. I'm pretty sure it'll work out - I have lots of cabomba type plants - Rotalla wallichii (Big clump!), Cabomba and Ambulia o provide lots of complexity, A large (About 12") Java moss log with 2/3 caves, Cabomba, Hygro, Crypt becketii petchii outside 2, Rotalla, Echindorus 'red diamond' and Crypt wendtii 'Tropica' outside the other. Pleco tends to like hanging round in the right side of the tank - where there is only 1 cave. Corys tend to play on the glass... So I think it should work out!

My big worry is QT. I'm doing it in the 11gal tank, for 2 weeks to a month. I have to add them all at once - it's an hours drive to the shop that stocks them, and I can't re-arrange the decor. I mean, have you ever tried uprooting a hi-tek planted tank? Not an easy job, for both the humans and fish + my parents would never let me. So, I'm slightly worried some real aggression will fire up in the QT. Any way I can stop this? I would have a spare 3gal of course - just how to persuade mum + dad to let me set it up temporarily...
