GBR meds?

My question is how do blue rams react to medications such as prozi pro? I have heard they do not fair well using meds. I believe that one of my rams have popeye. Don't know if it is or was just damaged in some way.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Hi John, WELCOME TO FISHLORE !

Popeye is nothing to wait on. Most meds are ok for fish that have scales. Tetras are the only fish I know of for sure that you have to be careful of, and with them they often tell you to use the med. 1/2 strength. I would suggest you quarantine your fish, and use Maracyn-two by Mardel. It is effective against pop-eye, and even if it is an injury it will help clear bacterial infections. Use as directed, and if you feel uneasy about the dosing, use 1/2 strength, but use for the entire time as directed.

Be sure to take any charcoal out of the filter before medicating, and use charcoal after full course of antibiotic to remove it from the water, then discard the charcoal after 24 hours.

Pop eye and many other infections can be caused by water conditions. What are your levels of ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate?

Water changes should be done to maintain a cycled tank at 5-10 ppm of nitrate. This requires at least 25-50% changes every week. Good luck and tell us how it goes.

susitna-flower,
Thanks so much for such a fast reply. I keep discus and thought I would give the rams a try. The perams in this tank are;
Temp= 82-83f
ammonia = 0
nitrite = 0
nitrates = around 8ppm
This tank has been up and running for 6 or7 months. I change 30% twice a week.
I just purchased this batch of rams and they seemed fine and all of a sudden the one big male had one eye looking like it is about to fall out. They are all in the same QT tank and the 40g tank that are going to be used for rams still have discus in it.
Would it be alright to just med the whole QT tank with all the rams in it. I know may be a little costly.

My way of treating pop-eye has always worked so far.

Put the fish in a qt tank.
Lots of water changes, in both the tanks.
Raise the temp to about 85F for a little while, mostly in the qt tank, but sometimes in the home tank.
And sometimes, if I have any, I add Methilyn(?) Blue, just a drop or so in the qt tank.

Those are the steps I follow and every fish has lived on. Hope it works for you.

Thanks Tom,
Here is what I did so far, I set up a 2.5g hospital tank and used the water from the 30g QT and placed a small seeded sponge filter and a heater into it.
Now I have another question for you all,,do I use the water from the home tank (for the bio) when I do water changes or do I use aged water from my holding tanks? I wondered because maracyn can kill the bio in my sponges?
Anyhow I set this treatment tank up of only 2.5g so I would have to use less meds $$ I am slowly bringing the temp up from 82-83 to around 86.

Man makes me wonder?? Spend all this time and money to save an 8 dollar fish

Good question, but since the bacteria doesn't "live" IN the water, but ON surfaces, it wouldn't help much. Water changes will keep your fish safe...from the mini-cycling problems that might occur. Just remember that if you change water, you have to compensate with some % of more mediation. This should be all cleared up in a week or two at the most....I agree with Tom, 84-85 should be high enough....

Main thing about the water changes is to hopefully change out water with same ph and temperature as is in the tank....

Ok here is an update. Been 6 days and he has gotten better so much better I put him back in with his mate. Both were very excited and just swam all over the tank. I could tell she missed him and he missed her. I know I spent a total of $16.00 and some change to help an $8.00 fish but hey I love fish and he is better and that is all that counts His eye is still a bit bulgie but really clear.
So far so good.
