Wanting a pair of GBR

I've researched some info on these types of fish. But I actually want some info from people who are experienced in keeping these types of fish. I was wondering what i should worry more about in my water quality in my new tank(cycling). Should i worry a lot on temp? pH? nitrates? Becuase I hear these fish are a bit difficult to keep. But im willing to do anything to keep these types of fish. They're so fascinating! I'm also giving thought about keeping Bolivian Rams. Just need some input! =]

Hi TB19
I have some experience with GBRs. They do not do well in a newly cycled tank, as they prefer a more mature tank, you are right they are very sensitive to water conditions. They need pristine water conditions that include vacuuming and water changes about every three days. They do best in soft water with PH of 6.0-6.4. Most information say that the water temperature should be between 72-77*. My GBR that I have had for about four months is in water that is at 81-82* and doing fine.
The most important thing is that they prefer the more acidic, soft water and a lower PH level than what you have in your tank.

yeah it looks like my water conditions arent suitable for them...
There has to be a way to condition my water for them
I'll keep trying though.
How about Bolivians?

I have hard water and GBRs...I love my fishies. What I did...driftwood. It lowered the PH and softened the water. The fish seem to be happy. They haven't spawned yet, but they have only been in there a month yet, so I'm hopeful still. Honestly, it took my convicts a month to start breeding, and they'll breed on a dime. LOL

well i heard that driftwood would only temporarily lower the ph becuase the tannins the driftwood releases would be removed by weekly water changes. I really like these fish
but I cant get great water around my area. So im going to get Bolivian Rams
They're just as great!

i think driftwood will keep the ph lowered long term.

i would look for GBR's in your area that are NOT wild caught. Tank raised GBR's can adapt to a wide range of PH, you would just have to take about 1-2 hours slowly acclimating them. (adding a little of your water to the bag every 15 minutes)

my GBR's are doing great in my 55 with driftwood, and i got a breeding pair!
