I have rainbows... I keep mine with a red tailed shark and a shoal of celebes rainbows. I have also heard that they get along great with barbs. Rainbows are crazy eaters so make sure that you don't keep them with anything small enough to be seen as lunch. I made that mistake by trying to put in a shoal of threadfin rainbows and lost half them in the blink of an eye.
As far as price goes I know in my area they usually run between 7-20 dollars each for young ones... although petsmart carries a hybrid variety that only costs 2-4 dollars and is really beautiful.
