Turquoise Rainbows

I just picked up some turquise rainbows to add to my community. I am shocked to she just how much they have colored up and they aren't even fully grown. I added some Australian rainbows to make sure there were enough for a school. This was apparently the best thing to do as the danios and tetras are all schooling together now with the rainbows, its quite a nice sight.

The reason for the post is a quick question for any other turquise owners. I have two males and one is obviously larger. The larger in the store looked very much like the others in the tank. After a few hours in the tank he developed a VERY bright orange and yellow flash of color on his forehead. Its quite beautiful and I was wondering if this is a normal behavior. Also, I am sure its not a bosemani rainbow.

That sounds similar to the mating behavior described on Adrian Tappin's rainbowfish website:

Depending on water conditions, captive environment and diet, Melanotaenia lacustris can display an array of different colours and patterns ranging from cobalt blue, steel blue, aquamarine through to lighter and darker shades of turquoise. When spawning the nape area changes to a bright orange or gold colouration.

Well 48 hrs in the tank and they decide to spawn. Lovely! There is magic in these waters I tell you, magic.

Edit: Killer link by the way

I'm glad it helped!

I've been a huge fan of that site since I stumbled across it a few months ago... I wasn't expecting much out of an ISP-hosted website that didn't even have a dedicated domain name, but that judgment was clearly premature

my rainbows do the same thing, its amazing the colors they turn, if you want to see something interesting have a room light on and the tank light off and watch the colors they turn, I have 5 turquoise and 2 boeseman and they put on quite a show

AWESOME! I have added some boseman and will try this trick. Ive noticed that in the moring before I switch on the light they are more colorful. I have to clean the tank tonight, but will try this before I do that. Thanks!
