Welcome to Fishlore

3-4 is minumum... but I think they do better in larger shoals. What type?

I have 1 parkinsoni rainbows and 2 goyder river rainbows (they shoal together). I only have 3 right now because I just cycled the tank... but I'm planning on getting at least 2 more parkinsoni... and 2-3 of another variety as well. I know that Petsmart has a great deal on what they call Australian Rainbows... I think that they are a hybrids...Rainbow fish are Beautiful fish! Goodluck.

If you can afford it the boesemani rainbows are very pretty. They are endangered and run between 10 and 17 dollars a fish. I was lucky enough to find a 5 for $40 sale. I have just the school of 5 right now and they're really fun to feed. They swim really fast all over the tank eating everything they can catch. Its like watching pirrana haha. But yeah, they do better in bigger groups. They could do 3 if there's other fish they could school with. For example, sometimes I catch a couple of the Boesemanis schooling with my swordtail pair.
