Saying Hello!

Hi ppl!
New to the forum, at the moment I have a 28 gal tank a new setup of 4wks.

My Question: What is the best way to breed rainbowfish? The setup?, What should I use for the eggs anchor?, What ratio of fish per my size tank?, What should I feed the parents and fry? All experiences would be very helpful as I am new to taking care of rainbows.

So far have added total of 3 fish:
1 male crowntail betta
2 pair of neon dwarf rainbowfish
and 2 plants.

Tank in the cycling process has diatoms or brown algae, cleaning the sides everyday. About to test tank for parameters and will do partial water change if needed will update. Temp is 77-80 due to sun light

Equiptment used: 50 watt heater, 17 watt light bulb, Whisper 40 w/ bio filter.

Thank you so much for the help,

Tigerfish

I've never bred rainbows, but here are some articles worth a read while you wait for someone with experience to come along:

http://members.optushome.com.au/chelmon/Feeding1.htm
http://members.optushome.com.au/chelmon/Breedbow.htm

Those pages (and the links on them) contain a ton of information regarding nutrition, tank setup, male/female ratio, etc.

welcome to fishlore!! mathas gave some great links for breeding...but, the betta will eat your fry or the rainbows could be agressive towards your betta as they get in breeding mode..so keep an eye on that..goodluck and share some pics when you can we love pics

Great thanks for the facts and advice

Update: Ammo: 0 nitrite: 0 pH: 7.6 nitrate: oops my test kit exp in 2003 lol so I'll have to get a new one when my LFS opens tom.

Ques should I go ahead a do a partial water change anyway or wait for the kit?

are you due for a water change? you didnt have any issues with your fishies in the post so for now, just stick with your normal routine

Water Changes

Since it's a new tank I haven't been changing the water that much I didn't want to disrupt the cycling of the tank.
Can I go more than 2wks without changing the water?

Thanks,

Tigerfish

did you test your water yet? if so, what is the ammonia, nitrites, and nitrates? that will depend on water changes

everything I tested pans out (above post), except the nitrate it shows 0, I think it's wrong cause my test kit expired.

oops missed that sorry ...without a correct reading and a reliable kit, i can advise other than to say playing it safe with partial water changes is best..especially in a new tank ..how did you cycle it? how long has it been set up? ..once a tank is completely cycled, and you know the parimeters are stable, once every 2 weeks is fine provided you dont overfeed and arent overstocked ...

it's an old tank had fish in it I added gravel new and old but has been dryed out so no good bacterial left... I added two large plants on of which it spliting off new growth sry not sure of the species... Then added the betta, did a water change 2 wks later and added the pair of rainbows... This is wk 4! everything is stable except knowing about the nitrate, so far fish look fine and aren't acting stressed.
