Turquoise Rainbowfish

Hi! My name is Becky and I am new to this forum. I have a question. I belong to the Eastern Iowa Aquarium Association and we are going to have a "grow out contest". The fish we are using is the Turquoise Rainbowfish which I have never kept before. I have an empty bow front 45 gallon tank that I was going to put them in. However, after reading about them and their activity level I think they will do better in my 60 gallon planted tank. But that brings me to my question.

In that tank I have 11 angels (largest is about the size of a half dollar), 7 neons, 10 lemon tetras, 4 "kribs", 1 ruby crown ram, 6 cory cats and three out of place betas. Oh, and 4 young bushy nose plecos. In order to add the rainbows I will take out some of my angels (have planned on doing this anyway, can put them in the 45) but still leave 3 or 4 angels in the tank.

Do you think it will be okay to add rainbows to this tank? How many do you think I can safely add? Will they nip at my angels? Thanks for the help. Becky

Hi Becky and welcome to fishlore.
I had turquoise rainbows before with my Angel fish and I can say the two never bothered each other. I have rainbows in with my Angel fish now, ( not turks tho) and they get a long fine.
I dont know how many you planned on adding to your tank and as it is, it may be a bit overstocked, but not by too much and hopefully your BN are still babies, as they do generate a lot of bio load, being Pleco's.
As long as you keep up your water change, which I'm sure you are doing it should be fine.
considering that this is a 'grow out' contest, Im assuming you will be keeping your rainbows for awhile as they get big. They can reach up to 4.5 inches so you really do not have a lot of room. I would think about re housing more than just the Angels if you have the room?
Good luck with the project.. it sounds like a lot of fun!

hmmm, I am thinking that I will put all but 4 of the angels in the other tank along with 1 pair of my kribs, two plecos (they are all babies) and I will find another home for my bettas. I do 50 per cent water changes at least once a week. I could also move my ram. If I do these changes how many rainbows do you think I could put in? As things grow I also have another empty 60 gallon tank that I can move things too but all my tanks are either in my kitchen or my living room right now and it is getting a little crowded. lol
