Australian vs. Bosemani
I just bought 2 rainbow at PetSmart. They are labeled as Australian rainbow but they have the half-half color thing going that make me think they are Bosemani. How do I tell the difference? The front half is more of less greenish yellow. The back half is more reddish orange. However, they don't look exactly like my other Bosemani that I've had for a few months now.
I would try to take some pictures but as new fish tend to be, they are hiding and scared right now. So, pictures are not likely to come by in the near future. If someone could help me figure out what type I have, I'd much appreciate it.

Can Australian rainbow cross breed with Bosemani? Even though the fish have the half-half look, they also have these horizontal lines going from head to tail, more resembling Australian, as pictures I've seen. I wonder if I have a hybrid...

Hi Maraloma
If your Petsmart is like the others of the same chain store I would be very surprised if you found Bosemani . The Petsmart that I got my rainbows from were advertised, Australian and they are not Bosemani. The half and half coloring on a Bosemani is yellow and blue, and not red/orange. The Australians in my experience and I have had quite a lot of them in my tanks do have the hue of coloring on them that changes a lot in the light and the horizontal stripes of color going through the body. They are also much more stream lined than the Bosemani who seem to have a much more rounder/football shape. But just cant be sure until you can add some photos for us. Good luck with them, they are wonderful fish to keep!

In Australia they probably have a different common name.

These are pictures of the 2 new "Australian" rainbow I bought from PetSmart this afternoon. Not the best pictures in the world, but you can see what I mean by half half coloring in most of the pictures.

These 2 pictures are of the Bosemani that I've had for a couple of months. The new "Australian" rainbow look awfully similar to the old Bosemani. But, I'm a newbie and I don't know how to tell the difference between different rainbows.
I went to a LFS this afternoon to check out their full grown Australian rainbow and they definitely don't have the half-half look that mine have. However, mine are juvenile so who knows if that's going to change. I don't see the really dark horizontal lines on _my_ Australian though.

Hi Miraloma
thanks for posting photos. Now I can see why you were confused. They really do look like Boeseman. Wonder how that happened? lol... If they are, you scored big! I know that the A.Rainbows are pretty inexpensive at Petsmart and at other LFS the Boeseman go for big bucks! Good eye there when you spotted them!

Hi Seedy
In Australia you can find these Rainbows in streams. They are usually under the genus Melanotaenia. Then you have the New Guinea Rainbows, like the Lake Tebera Rainbow fish. The Salmon Red Rainbow fish are from Lake Sentani and surrounding areas in Inian Jaya New Guinea. The common Australian Rainbow's scientific name is the Melanotaenia Splendida.
I would think they would be pretty popular where you are.

To answer your question, yes, different varieties of rainbowfish can and do interbreed, which is why it's better to only keep one species in a particular tank in order to prevent this from happening.
Frankly I don't know the different varieties well enough to know what you have, though Good luck!

Typical Bosemani go for about $10-$12 around here. The _Australian_ rainbow I got were $1.99 each. A bargain shopper such as I am, I just couldn't pass up the possible excellent deal. I just don't know for sure if these are Bosemani or not.

Thanks for the replys.
Melanotaenia splendida is called an " Eastern Rainbow " over here.
I'd never heard of an " Australian Rainbow " and I'm from Australia...lol
