Red Iran Rainbow fish

I have 2 Red Iran Rainbow fish and I was told that they would get bright red. They have a little red color to them but they are definately not bright red. Does anyone else have these fish and if so are they bright red? I really wanted a pop of color in my tank so i'm a little disapointed.

I dont know much about this type of fish, but I do know that with most fish their color doesnt really show until they get bigger and older. Of course the healthier they are and the diet of food you are feeding them also helps bring out their color.

It looks like your fish are still pretty small, so maybe their color will get brighter the older and bigger they get.

Hi, I have these fish, and can only say they get VERY dark "Brick" red....not a bright scarlet, or blood red. They are nice in a tank, I tried taking a picture of mine just now, but the color with the light from windows behind, just didn't do it justice, so I didn't down load it....I'll try to get a night time and post it later.

You can already see the contrast of silver, that continues to show. With a male and female you will have the most vivid colors.

I have to say here though that these fish do get up to 4-6", mine is about 5", and along with the other fish you currently have (balas especially), you need a much larger tank.

The balas need 72" length in their tank, they are fast and active fish. The other problem at this point is that 40 on nitrates is double the "safe" limit and you need to up your water changes. This is one of the down sides to overstocking a tank, and will lead to disease because the fish are stressed. Good Luck, It sounds like you have interesting taste in fish....

These arn't the iran. There the New Guinea- Glossolipis incisus. Have to watch the pet stores some of them get the names mixed up. Here's a pic of my New guinea. If you buy rainbows before you go to the store try to look up the rainbow you want to buy so you know what there suppose to look like before you go. I only buy from breeders here in colo. as they have much better color than the ones at the stores. You might try to find a local breeder in your area.

Hi T Fishie...Click the image to open in full size.Guess I'm 6 months late but I just signed up. I suspect your problem has been solved by just waiting for your red rainbows to mature. If not, I've had this problem in the past. My water from the tap is somewhat hard with a basic pH of 7.5. However, due to some overcrowding and overfeeding, it quickly goes acidic...ph below 7... if I limit my water changes to 10-20% once a week. At this point my 4 dark colored red rainbows explode into a bright salmon red, and their activity seems to increase as well. If, however, for whatever reason, I do several major water changes in quick succession over several days...like in preparation for a long trip...the ph rises to over 7 and the brilliant red fades to the dark color. Unfortunately, I did a major change this morning in preparation to a major trip and their color is somewhat diminished but it's not bad. The picture isn't great but 'I'll see if I can't attach it.
