29 G stocking suggestions needed

We have one 4" rainbow shark and a 29 gallon tank. We are currently testing 0 for ammonia and nitrites and 10-20 for nitrate. We need tried and true advise for fish that are hardy and hopefully attractive!
Our Story
Our tank is about 5 months old and has seen its problems. We started our tank as a homeschool project. Before discovering HOW to cycle a tank here we followed pet shop advise. Subsequently, we have lost 3 cherry barbs. I believe 1 to ammonia and 2 to some sort of ulcerative sore by their rear end. We tried treating for bacterial infections but lost them both. Not fun.

I have essentially lost all faith in pet store employees knowledge base and am dismayed by the number of "floaters" I see when at the store. So help us folks. We'd just love some good suggestions to finally complete this very long and somewhat heartbreaking school project. Thanks!

welcome to fishlore!!!
I think most of us have been where you were...pet stores as you know, are awful with advice....seeing how your shark baby is very territorial, a middle or top dwelling species would be best.....dwarf gourami's, tetra's, guppies, mollies, glo fish, and many others that hang out in the middle or top would be great....heres a good link to check out a bunch of different fish http://www.fishlore.com/freshwaterfish.htm goodluck

hi and welcome

most of us have been in the same situation you're in like shawnie said, unfortunately LFS generally aren't really in it for the fish so much as to make money

at any rate, here's the stocking list that i'm working on, hopefully it can help you out!
