Rainbow Shark Growth/Tank Habits

Hey fellas. I just bought my first Rainbow Shark today. I adjusted him well to the ph, and about 20 minutes ago let free. What are good tempertures to have the tank at, and what kind of plants and stuff would he like? Also, the Tank is 10 gallons. He is going to be in there by himself, so will he grow larger? Finally, if I decided to add, say, a couple of danios with him, would he still be allright? Thanks.

If he is alone in the ten gallon tank I suggest that you keep him by him self because they may get up to 7 inches in length, and prefer larger tanks, but for the most part I think it would be allright if kept be himself. Good tempuratures for him would be from 72 to 82 degrees fehrenheit. You should add a couple of accessories that allow it to hide. Good plants would be anubias and java ferns.

welcome to fishlore!!

ill post a website that gives information about redtailed sharks but just keep in mind that a rainbow can grow up to 7 inches (the redtailed grow up to 4.5 or so)
http://www.aqualandpetsplus.com/Shark,%20Red-Tail.htm
the information works for both types of sharks because they have the same habits and what not.

here is the fishlore's info to compare.. http://www.fishlore.com/profiles_rainbow_shark.htm

if u were to add danios to your tank the shark would end up eating them.. bigger fish eat smaller fish.. as simple as that

At 1 time, hubby and I thought we were gonna make a "shark" tank involving 2 Rainbows and 2 Bala sharks. BAD idea!! 1 of our Rainbows became extremely dominant and bullied the others to death. Now all I have in the 35 gal. tank is the 1 Rainbow Shark and 1 Rope Fish, and they seem to do fine with each other.
Good luck!!
OH, btw, the other Rainbow Shark I ended up putting in my 55 gal. with my social fish and they GREAT together.

The Rainbow shark is overcrowded in a 10 gallon tank, even by itself. The minimum size tank for that fish is 55 gallons...Reason being that they are one of the larger fish, that have to be sized more at 1 cubic inch of adult size per gallon....AND, they need the "running room", similar to bala sharks that need a longer tank. Don't house them with smaller fish, or ANYTHING that looks like they do, this will encourage aggression, and problems in the tank.
