Grrr...

My LFS has this special running where if you bought stuff in october (and boy, did I buy stuff!) you got a five dollar off coupon. Well I had two of them, so, ten bucks off, plus I get a free fish every month if I choose (or plant; it's part of a frequent buyer's thing), so I decided to look around to see what they had.

I've been fantasizing about a dwarf puffer tank for some time now, just haven't had the time to setup a new tank, etc. Well I figured I could at least research the cost now so that I knew what I was getting into. I was interested in dwarf puffs 'cause they're freshwater, not brackish, and since I've only just gotten truly comfy with freshwater, I didn't feel I was ready to start keeping brackish.

I asked the store employee if they carried dwarf puffers. She says yes they do, and her coworker confirms it. So she takes me to them, and the label says S.A. Freshwater Puffer (brackish). Grows to 4". I'm like... "uh, these are not dwarf puffers. Dwarf puffers are smaller, only about an inch, and they don't need brackish water."

She looks at me and says "well, we have smaller puffers." She then points to a tank of baby GSPs. I'm like "not it either." Apparently none of my local pet stores carry actual dwarf puffs. Oh well, perhaps sometime in the future.

I assume you are talking about Jack's (I work there). We no longer carry Pea Puffers/Dwarf Puffers. We were told that they have died in shipment before because they're delicate.

I had to go to Petland. They will order them for you. I wasn't thrilled with the quality of the dwarf puffers that came in.

Huh. They did the $5 coupons last month too? We also have a Fish of the Month card. Strange.

Oops, my mistake, the 5 dollar ones were jacks. The frequent buyer thing was psp though This is why i shouldn't type while eating... lol. I have not used my 5 dollar things for jacks yet. They're usually much more knowledgeable than the psp people.

I should edit it to I wasn't thrilled with the quality of the puffers that came in.

I am happy with the service. I was there a few days ago asking about various foods for my stars & stripes puffer. I liked that they fed theirs a crayfish to prove how much they enjoy the food. Steve (my puffer) gets them once a week now!

Not to take away from the original poster here but aquatic mouse brings up a very good point.

One thing for anyone to do is ask the store to feed a fish you are thinking of buying.
A popular fish here on the forum seems to be Mikrogeophagus Ramirezi, the Blue Ram, and as many people know they are somewhat sensitive. Just a tip, for this fish and really any fish you are thinking of getting, ask the store to feed it so you can see it eat. Any fish should have a decent appetite and should eagerly accept the food it is given. If the fish is eating what the store is feeding another tip is buy a small can of food that they are using to help the fish transition easier. You can later choose to switch the food once home for awhile but this should make the initial feedings go smoother.

Good luck finding a puffer hooxeii!
