This sounds like Capt. Clack, jumped the tank while I was cleaning, puffed...and it wasn't long after...

They drop in health so fast, there's nothing better you could have done. I'm sure you gave him a wonderful home for the time you did have together.

It explains the mechanisms behind puffing. Basically, it's a difficult process that can end up with crushed organs and lots of other problems.
