just got a puffer today

Hey everyone. So glad I found this place. It has been really helpful.
I just got a puffer today. I believe he is a dwarf, the guy at the pet store said he wouldn't get much bigger and he's pretty small,he's spotted green color on back. He was with another one in the tank at the store and I was thinking I should have gotten both because he seems kind of sad, but I only have a 10gal tank to put him in, oh well... I hope he'll be okay by himself. He keeps looking at his reflection on the glass and hitting it. I got him extra plants to put in his tank because I only had a couple from my other fish that I had in there previously. He isn't paying attention to any of that though, just his reflection. He won't eat right now either, but it's only been an hour since I got him. Is this normal for them to react this way? Should I get him a friend?

it's a green spotted puffer..... all I have is a 10 gal tank for him He seems to have enough room.I do have a 40 gal tank, but i have mollies in it and I don't want the puffer to attack them. The puffer just ate and boy does he chew and tear! Does anyone have their puffer in a smaller tank then recommended? Do you think he would be okay with the mollies? I've become attached to my mollies and would feel really bad if he ate them.

He almost certainly would harm the mollies. He needs at least a 29g tank and he also needs highly brackish (almost marine strength) water. You should either return him, return the mollies, or get a new tank that's at least 29g for him.

Good advice Maddie I agree. A 10 gallon tank for a fish that gets 6 inches long is WAY to small and will stunt his growth. I am sorry the LFS misinformed you
